How to be Car Free

The constraints of life are unpredictable, so if you can’t make it to and from work without your car, at least try to make an effort to get around during the day without one.  Here are some options:

Take the Bus
Check out the Central Ohio Transit Authority’s website to customize your route.  Be sure to try out COTA’s Google Trip Planner to map your journey, and don’t forget about their Bike ‘n Bus program.

Walk or Bike
Enjoy the Central Ohio Greenway Trail System by foot or bike.  Use the Columbus Metro Bike User Map to see which roads are safest to ride on.

Carpool
Find a fellow Car Free Day participant to carpool with. Call MORPC’s RideSolutions Program at 614.233.4131 to leave your name and your starting destination to see if other participants can be matched with you to share the ride.

Take a Pedicab to a Meeting or Lunch
Instead of driving your car to run errands throughout the day, consider using an ECT Pedicab.  They will be patiently waiting for passengers throughout the downtown area on Car Free Day to transport them via rickshaw to destinations that might be too long to walk, but not far enough for a vehicle.  If you don’t feel like hunting them down, feel free to call them ahead of time to schedule a trip: 614-206-7448.

Rent a Bike for Free from the EveryoneBikes Program in the Short North to Run Errands
Stop by Paradise Garage at 941 North High Street to rent out a bike to run errands or grab lunch. The bike, a helmet and lock are provided for free, thanks to a partnership between several Short North businesses called EveryoneBikes. Feel free to call them ahead of time at 614-299-0899 to ensure that a bike is available. Or check out a map of the 15 other businesses that offer the free bikeshare program.
